My Journey to Become an Estate Attorney
After obtaining a degree in Music Theory and piano, I pondered my next option. Inspired by Diane Keaton in “Baby Boom,” I intended to become a lawyer. I would wear Armani suits and jet back and forth between the coasts, instructing my assistant to “get the car ready.”
In furtherance of that ideal, I entered a contest to win a trip to Italy to study mergers and acquisitions and
won. But corporate law did not speak to me; indeed the law itself I found quite drab and dreary.
Then the opportunity to work with numerous people in Seattle who were doing a unique brand of
client-focused estate planning came my way, and it seemed to fit me.
Using whatever legal mechanisms were available, how could I provide a safe, secure future for my clients
and the people they loved?
I honed my craft with the help of some of the best in the legal field, and then a new opportunity came
along: working in attorney discipline. Doing this work, I contributed to the safety and security of clients in
general by prosecuting lawyers committing ethical violations which very often included stealing their
clients’ money.
It was eye-opening, and it seared into my brain the conduct rules to which attorneys are held. These
rules are more important to me than ever in my private practice.
In my practice, there are no services rendered without a contract, and in most cases no money changes
hands without the contracted-for services.
Before forming the contract, I listen hard to what my client wants, and communicate in realistic terms what
I can do in furtherance of the client’s goals.
While doing the work, I continue to communicate with my client relative to the time frame and any
questions that arise. I answer inquiries timely, and employ as much empathy in responding as I would
want, were I the client.
“At the signing ceremony to finalize the work, everyone generally feels so good. I genuinely enjoy the
work, and my reviews attest that my clients enjoy the experience of working with me.”
